R.E.N.N.S. - Supporting your Writing

Hi guys,

One of the things that we will really stress this term in our writing work is the need to properly support your ideas.  Without support and examples, your ideas will not have the same strength or clarity.  R.E.N.N.S.  is an acronyn that can help you remember how and why to add support to your writing.

R.E.N.N.S.  means Reasons, Examples, Names, Numbers, Senses can all be types of support

  • Reasons:  Give reasons why your idea is good/bad, right/wrong, useful/useless
  • Examples: Give some clear, provable examples, or explanations of what you mean
  • Names:  Use specific names and titles, or group names
  • Numbers: Use specific provable numbers
  • Senses: refer to any of our senses (sight, touch, smell, sound, taste)

So from now on, always keep this in mind so that when you are writing you don't forget to add in proper support for your ideas.  In fact you should keep this information in your mind as you are planning your writing so that you can organize the proper supporting details before you start to actually write.

You can look at this web page for examples of sentences.

Cheers,

Eric
